The site of the former Umeda Higashi Elementary School
Osaka Prefecture Nishinari-Gun Kitano Elementary School was established in 1875 in what is now Kamiyama-cho in Osaka's Kita Ward. The school was renamed to Nozaki Ordinary Elementary School in 1882 and was moved to this location in 1906, finally being renamed to Umeda Higashi Elementary School in 1947. After this, the school closed its doors in 1989 due to a declining student population and merged its staff and student body with Sonezaki Elementary School to become Osaka Municipal North Elementary School. The Osaka Municipal Umeda Higashi Study Hall was built on this site. While the Hall was utilized greatly as a center for cultural exchange, lifelong education and training, the land was eventually sold off by the City of Osaka. In April 2017, the Osaka Institute of Technology opened the Umeda Campus, from which the knowledge to support the future can be spread throughout the world.
